The Story

Golden Gate Overlook Trail and Battery Sites

The Golden Gate Overlook was established in 2012 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge and sits within the San Francisco Headlands, where seacoast defense gun emplacements have been active since 1885, leaving visible ruins including foundations for 6 inch pillar mounted rifles along the bluff. The adjoining trail passes four named battery sites—Battery Godfrey, Battery Boutelle, Battery Marcus Miller, and Battery Cranston—and runs beneath the east end of the Golden Gate Bridge itself, offering unobstructed upward angles on the span. Battery Godfrey, dating to 1895, once housed three large guns, and the structural foundations and concrete remnants remain traceable today.

Session Tips

  • Visitors should follow Leave No Trace principles and stay on maintained trails to avoid erosion and dangerous falls from coastal bluffs.
  • Plan your shoot around golden hour at sunset to capture the iconic Golden Gate Bridge light.
  • Following the California Coastal Trail provides scenic route access to and from the Golden Gate Overlook.
  • The round-trip trail to Marshall's Beach is less than 1 mile but involves a lot of stairs, making it unsuitable for everyone.
  • The trail leading to the Golden Gate Overlook offers additional views beyond the bridge itself, making it well worth visiting.

  • Layered clothing is always suggested for this trail because hot sun can quickly turn to cold foggy wind.
