Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a 2,000-acre wildland within San Diego city limits featuring 200-foot carved sandstone bluffs, rare twisted Torrey pines, and Pacific Ocean overlooks.
Torrey Pines State Reserve covers 2,000 acres of San Diego coastline from Del Mar to La Jolla, with sandstone bluffs, one of just two native Torrey pine populations, a freshwater lagoon, and Pacific overlooks. Low foot traffic lets photographers shoot the cliffs, twisted pines, and beach at sunrise, sunset, pre-dawn, or moonlight.

The Torrey Pines State Reserve features a grove of the country's rarest pine trees, which the strong coastal wind shapes into gnarled forms on the mesa above the bluffs. These sandstone cliffs plunge up to 300 feet to the ocean below, running between Del Mar and La Jolla. The park's visitor center occupies a pueblo-style building from 1922, originally constructed as a restaurant and known as the former Torrey Pines Lodge.

The Torrey pine is one of the rare species of pines in the world and grows on the mesa atop the bluffs at the reserve.

The reserve opens at 7:15 am, allowing early access for sunrise work at Broken Hill, where pre-dawn light produces panoramic views across the Pacific toward La Jolla. Eight miles of trails cross a coastal plateau with cliff-top ocean vistas, but the sandy, unstable cliffs are known to collapse and demand careful footing. Spring brings blooms of monkeyflower, California poppy, and seaside daisy along the paths, while late fall and winter offer sightings of gray whales migrating south to Baja from the Discovery Trail and West Overlook.
Photoshoots at Torrey Pines can be booked in 30 minute, 60 minute, or 100 minute lengths, or a custom duration.
