The $15-million park was opened on July 19, 2008 and was the first to open in Downtown Los Angeles in over 100 years.
Vista Hermosa Natural Park, a 10.5-acre site at 100 N Toluca Street in Historic Filipinotown, opened July 19, 2008 as downtown LA's first public park in over a century. Designed by Mia Lehrer + Associates, this former oil field required hydrogen sulfide and methane mitigation and now features native habitat and a downtown skyline view.

Built on a former early-1900s oil field that was never properly capped, Vista Hermosa sits in a dense, working-class part of downtown Los Angeles that had lacked any public park for over a century. Construction required removing the polluted topsoil and replacing it, then installing a permanent ventilation system to control the hydrogen sulfide and methane gas. The completed park became the first new public open space in downtown Los Angeles in more than 100 years.
Six photo spots at Vista Hermosa Park include a bench, a viewpoint, a playground, trails, a nature walk, and a meadow clearing.

Studio-MLA completed this park in 2008, working from community workshops that shaped its programming. The grounds include an informal grotto, adventure play area, trail system, picnic areas, an open meadow, and a sports field, offering varied backdrops across a single site. The sculpted topography manages 95% of on-site rainfall through permeable paving, green roofs, vegetated swales, and a 30,000-gallon cistern, with the meadow and swales providing year-round green subjects for the camera.
Vista Hermosa Natural Park does not offer on-site parking; the closest parking is at 100 N Toluca St Los Angeles.
Vista Hermosa Park is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm.

Vista Hermosa Natural Park spans 10 acres on a steep hillside, the result of transforming a former oil field and brownfield site into an urban green space. The name itself, translating to "beautiful view" in Spanish, points to the park's signature downtown LA skyline vista that makes it a rewarding subject for landscape photography. Plans to develop the property as a massive educational complex were halted by its location over an old oil field and fault line, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority now uses the site to teach community members and children about the native Southern California landscape.
Vista Hermosa is part of the 'Transit to Trails' program, which provides free bus service from the park to the Santa Monica Mountains.; 100 N Toluca St, Los Angeles, CA; Near 110/101 interchange, Historic Filipinotown

The 0.4-mile loop trail at Vista Hermosa Natural Park takes roughly half an hour with 45 feet of elevation gain, moving past a grotto, an adventure play area, and a meadow arranged in sequential terraces beneath a canopy of 800 trees. The bench framed by downtown skyscrapers sits on the side opposite the entry gate, so photographers should plan a weekday visit to avoid the weekend crowds and lines that form for that shot. Native plantings along the trail also attract 60 bird species along the Pacific Flyway, and the quiet path accommodates tripods well for both landscape and bird work.
A typical visit takes about 0.5 hours to walk the 0.4-mile loop with 45 feet of elevation gain.
A typical visit to Vista Hermosa Natural Park takes about 30 minutes.
The park layers soft terraces for play and gathering, a nature walk, and a meadow for visitors to move through in sequence.
