The Story

The Broad's Architecture and Foundation

The Broad opened to the public in September 2015, presenting contemporary art in a building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The museum's exterior "veil" has earned the nickname "the cheese grater" for its slatted appearance, offering a strong photographic subject from the adjacent sidewalks and plazas. The Broad Art Foundation, established in 1984 as a lending library for contemporary art, underpins the collection displayed inside.

The Story

The Broad's Veil and Vault Architecture

The Broad, founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, houses over 2,000 works of postwar and contemporary art dating from the 1950s to the present. Its "veil and the vault" architecture wraps a porous, honeycomb-like exterior around the building to filter natural daylight into the interior, with the storage "vault" suspended midway within the structure. The honeycomb veil casts patterned, filtered daylight into the galleries that shifts as the sun moves across the facade throughout the day.

The Broad's Gallery Design and Expansion
The Story

The Broad's Gallery Design and Expansion

The Broad spans 115,000 square feet with two floors of gallery space and a column-free third-floor gallery where filtered light enters through skylights in the veil. That diffused natural illumination produces even exposure across the third-floor permanent collection of works by Koons, Kruger, Warhol, Basquiat, and Sherman. A planned 2028 expansion will add roughly 70% more gallery space to the museum.
