The LA Arboretum is a little-known gem that is close to the Huntington Library but at a fraction of the cost for the photography permit.
The Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia offers ten landscape themes with flowers for macro photography, plus roaming peacocks, hummingbirds, and turtles in a prehistoric forest pool. A Baldwin Lake and Tule Pond restoration project begins construction in September. The permit costs less than at the Huntington Library.

The arboretum contains five late-19th-century vintage buildings that provide varied indoor and outdoor photo subjects. Among these, the Queen Anne Cottage was originally built for Elias Jackson Baldwin's third wife and later repurposed as a tribute to his fourth wife following their separation. The Gate House features a north-side peaked roof restored to its original mid-century form, with an open trellis covering the pavilion.
Here are six photo spots at the Los Angeles County Arboretum: cottages, greenhouses, gardens, a grove, a knoll, and a conservation garden.

The Los Angeles Arboretum's historic Entry Gate House was designed by Allison & Rible Architects, and the rehabilitation of the building alongside the entry plaza was completed in June 2023. The Arboretum maintains a dedicated history page covering the background of the site. The reconfigured plaza offers an updated vantage for photographing the restored structure and its surroundings.

Members enter the LA Arboretum at 8:00am, one hour before the 9:00am public opening, and tickets must be purchased online in advance. Drones are prohibited, only service dogs are admitted, and photographers should keep 10 feet from the free-roaming peacocks that may wander into frames uninvited. Bright lighting produces the strongest results, while aperture control can isolate a flower subject against a soft blurred background or keep the whole frame sharp.
Members gain early entry at 8:00am, one hour before the public 9:00am opening.
